Our Carbon Zero programme supports 15 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN to drive forward positive change to make the '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development' a reality. This set of 17 measurable Sustainable Development Goals aim to improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth, while working to preserve our oceans and forests. They build on the work of the Millennium Development Goals and are an intergovernmental set of aspirational goals with 169 targets.

It is clear that human activities are affecting the global climate, so it is vital that we find ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. This is where carbon offsetting can help. Carbon offsetting is a way to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by balancing or cancelling out the amount of these gases through participation in environmental projects.
At Toshiba, we are committed to the environment and with the help of the carbon offsetting experts at CO2balance we have devised a scheme with which we can offset the carbon
footprint of your Toshiba system. CO2balance has two regional offices in Kenya and Uganda and they support ethical carbon finance projects to deliver measurable benefits to several communities in Africa. These projects focus on quantifying the social and economic benefit in addition to CO2 emission reductions.
The participation and empowerment of local communities is crucial to ensuring the long-term acceptance and the success of the projects. With the help of CO2balance, we not only include the CO2 that is being emitted during the production and transportation of our products, but throughout the entire
product life-cycle. Therefore, depending on the scheme in place, we factor in a set number of printed pages to also cover any ongoing environmental impact. Through this process the emissions are balanced to become "Carbon Zero", which allows for positive printing and copying with no detrimental effect on the environment.
The African Energy Efficient Stove Project builds energy saving cooking stoves for villages in Kenya. These brick stoves result in 50% reduction in the need for firewood and thereby prevent carbon from being emitted. In addition to carbon prevention it also provides families with a cost and time effective method to cook with. The reduced need for firewood helps to prevent deforestation, creating benefits to the wildlife in terms of habitat, biodiversity and flood prevention.It is also a healthier method of cooking as it reduces in-door smoke by half. In-door smoke is a serious problem in Africa and the World Health Organisation dubbed it the “kitchen killer”, as it is responsible for nearly two million deaths in Africa every year.
Toshiba is comitted to help. Toshiba's Carbon Zero Scheme supports projects around the world to help people in need and try to lower the environmental impact of our business on the environment.
Our project concentrates efforts to find existing, but damaged water supplies and boreholes and repair them to restore the water supply to the people in the villages. When in full working order community boreholes provide a safe, clean source of water for an average of 200 families close to home. Our partner CO2balance maintains a programme to find and repair community boreholes that have fallen into disrepair. The boreholes are restored to full working order and a long term programme to maintain the system on a regular basis and secure the water supply for the local community is put in place.

This project was implemented in Barjobi Primary School in Otuke District in Uganda in 2022. Hygiene was a major challenge for pupils in this school due to a lack of handwashing facilities. Through the project the sanitary facilities of he school were renovated and the students as well as the staff received comprehensive hygiene and sanitation training.
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Toshiba Carbon Zero Programme contributes to enhancing safe water accessibility in Uganda. This was done without causing any further CO2 emissions thanks to boreholes powered with renewable solar energy. Photovoltaic panels enable the submersible pump to be powered in areas where grid electricity is not available.
